Botulinum toxin type A

This module introduces botulinum toxins, providing an overview of their history and use in aesthetic medicine. Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT/A) is reviewed in detail to explore the pharmacology, efficacy and safety profile, and how it can be employed in clinical practice to correct signs of ageing. Patient assessment and optimal management of possible adverse events will also be covered. This module consists of 3 courses.

Course A: The Science Behind Botulinum Toxin Type A

This course will outline the history of BoNT/A agents and describe their molecular structure and mechanism of action (MOA) in aesthetic medicine. The pharmacological similarities and differences between the currently available BoNT/A products will be summarized, as well as the key studies documenting their use in aesthetic medicine.

Course B: Practical Guide to Botulinum Toxin Type A

This course will provide practical advice on using BoNT/As for the treatment of lines and wrinkles, including the patient consultation process, equipment needed, and injection techniques.

Course C: Avoiding and Managing Adverse Events Associated with Botulinum Toxins

This course will discuss the contraindications for BoNTs, the possible adverse events associated with each of these agents in aesthetic medicine, and how these adverse events and other common mistakes (including BoNT/A handling and preparation) can be avoided and managed. Important details of patient evaluation are also reviewed, including medical history and individual anatomy.
